My thoughts on Obstacle Course Races

Over the Weekend I took part in an obstacle course race out in Lake Geneva Wisconsin. This particular race was called the Abominable Snow Race. It was your typical obstacle race that entailed multiple obstacles to challenge your overall strength, as well as 5 plus miles to challenge your endurance.

The Abominable Snow Race was an overall well run event (with the exception of only 2 bus to transport runners to the start line) that held a positive, nervous, and enthusiastic aura in the air. Fellow racers were friendly and eager to get to the starting line. While on the bus, everyone talked with each other and shared best wishes. Commonly heard topics were, "I wonder how hard the mountain climbs will be", and " I'm glad the temperature isn't sub zero".

The bottom line I want to let people know is simple. These races can be fun. It will challenge your strength and endurance in ways most traditional races won't. Patients will play a major role in your overall experience. A few times there were lines at obstacle's, causing delays. However, if you know this in advance and can except that, you should have a great time!

If you plan on taking on any of the multiple obstacle races out there, I'd like to give a few suggestions. They are as follow;

1. Get your grip strength in check

(most obstacles require this to be successful)

2. Work on your endurance

(you may be running mountains, hills, or long distances)

3. Practice lifting odd objects to build your strength

(buckets, stones, and logs are all commonly used in races

(I can't stress this enough, the course gets wet, muddy, and slippery)

5. Have fun and stay positive
